Future Lazy

So, it’s happening.

I’m getting total burn out from working out so much. Not just from running, but from everything. Though, running is a big part of it. Yesterday after hubs and I finished our Crossfit workout, I was pretty sure I never wanted to work out again. I mean, I was done. A few hours and a gigantic Sweet Tomatoes salad later, I was feeling a little better. But I still need a break.

March is back to back to back…to back races. (Yep, I’m racing 4 weekends in March.) Is it ok to plan future lazy? Because I’m pretty sure that’s happening in April. And by April, I mean the entire month.

I won’t be completely inactive because then I’ll just go crazy from that. (I know. I’m never happy.) But I do think I’ll be cutting all long runs in April and I’m still undecided what else. And with that, I give you 3 things that are not part of my lazy plan. (I feel like this post is very bi-polar.)

1.  My new pair of running shoes that have been Pants inspected and bunny approved.

I took my Nike Lunarglides back to the running store (third time’s the charm?) and the girl I talked to this time told me that based on my gait, she wouldn’t have put me in stability shoes at all. So that’s 3 different people, 3 different opinions if you’re keeping track. So I’m back in Mizunos and back in neutral running shoes. I had to get the men’s version because they didn’t have my size in the women’s. Nor did they have either of the styles that are actually cool.

Nope. Just fug man-shoes for Paula.

2.  I bought these videos on Sunday. (Half eaten Almond Joy not included)

I’ve never done a Jillian DVD before but I thought I’d give it a shot for something different when I want to work out but don’t feel like leaving the house. I’m also terrible about stretching, so I went for the yoga DVD. The “meltdown” part has me a little worried. Has anyone tried these DVDs yet? Shouldn’t yoga be relaxing? Why are things melting down?

3. Just when I said I’d never do another Disney race, I registered for the Tower of Terror 10 Miler. The race is at night (therefore, I will poop during it) and says:

10-mile course through the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, running on various terrains including pavement, grass and sand. We double-dare you to brave dark and ghostly streets haunted by Disney villains.

Sounds like a fun course and it’s not till September, so it will give me something to look forward to later this year, as well as fullfil my dream of running into an elevator shaft.

Do you ever take a break from working out? (I get burned out about twice a year, take a short break, and then I’m ready to get back to my regular schedule.)

  1. Wow, we are SO on the same page. I’m feeling totally burnt out. The fact that I can barely walk right now might have something to do with that. But more on that later.

    I’ve heard a lot of people say that you should NEVER wear a stability shoe, so I’m thinking 3rd time is definitely the charm. For the love of god, I hope so! I would be so fed up with those stupid “expert” running store people! Ugh.

    I have the JM Trouble Zones DVD and I really like it (as much as I can like something related to strength training). I don’t know why you need to melt down, but I’m thinking yoga is supposed to be relaxing and Jillian does not equal relaxation to me. You’ll have to do a full review.

      Yes! My workout yesterday has my whole body in pain. And of course I schedule all my workouts for the month, so I have another one tonight and Thursday that are paid for…so I have to do them. Hold me.

  2. I don’t have the yoga DVD but Rachael does! She can fill you in with details.
    Girl, you know I struggled a few months ago with burn out. It’s tough when it happens but I think a break is a good thing. You and I are race-a-holics in March. I am also racing 4 weeks in a row. We might be crazy. 😉
    And OMG, Sweet Tomatoes is the jam!

  3. Funny you mention it. I JUST did that yoga DVD last night. She’s not good at all about stretching, so I wouldn’t recommend it for that. But it is a good work out. My arms are killing me right now.

    I’m hunting for a good stretching yoga DVD. I’ll be happy to burn you a copy of whatever I find. 🙂

      I thought “meltdown” and “yoga” shouldn’t go together for some reason. Ok, so do that video when expecting a workout and not stretching. Check. 🙂 Let me know what you find on the yoga front. I know you are a yoga master.

  4. I really like Jillian’s 30 Day Shred video because it is short, yet challenging.
    I think we all go thru burn-out stages. I am sure a break will do ya good. Look at how hard you have pushed yourself and worked this last year?! You deserve some R & R friend!

  5. I like Jillian! I haven’t tried the yoga workout yet – but it might be the Yoga workout for me because she has confessed that she hates stretching and is not flexible in any way. LOL!

    I hope those shoes work – but it worries me that they are mens shoes. I’ve tried to wear mens and they don’t work – but your feet might be a better fit. *Fingers Crossed!*

    I’m not at the burn out point yet – I think it’s because I am super excited about our upcoming races. March is going to fly by for me though!

      Oh man, I hope you didn’t just jinx my shoes. Hee. I’m excited about our races too! I’m just super tired. So maybe I can nap on you afterwards. 🙂

  6. I’m toying with the idea of registering for Tower of Terror too! I’ve always wanted to run that one and I’m thinking this just might be the year for me to cave in and actually do it!

      This is the inaugural race! So you should do it this year. 🙂 I love nighttime races even though my stomach doesn’t love them.

      • They’ve had TOT races before, I think just not this distance. There was a 13k a few years ago at midnight on the 13th anniversary of the ride which would have been AWESOME!

        I’ve never done a night race, so I have no idea how I’d handle it!

  7. I was definitely burnt out on running at the end of last year, so I started doing crossfit and haven’t felt burnt out on it yet. I’ve only not gone once when I had planned on it because I was feeling super sick.

    I have both of those videos and like them 🙂 I really like the yoga one…it’s not super intense, but still can make you sweat 🙂

  8. Well, I am the opposite right now…I am burned out from doing nothing and am feeling crappy about it. I basically laid around all weekend, which seemed like a good idea at the time…but now I really do feel gross and unproductive and SO READY to get back into working out and eating well (but not too well) and blogging (I have seriously slacked on all three). Funny how a little break from life will make you appreciate that though…

    I would LOVE to run that race – looks so fun!

  9. I did the No More Trouble Zones, and I was literally screaming at the TV to make her stop. But that was also during my really fat time, so who knows what I’ll think of it now.

    I have 3 races in March, so I totally know what you mean. I plan to make April a really lazy month too.

    I wanna sign up for the ToT race!

  10. I definitely feel you on the being burned out- I went through that a couple weeks ago and have dropped down my workouts since then. It’s been glorious being semi-lazy but semi-not. I’d go crazy not working out at all but for now less intense is good!

    As for the Jillian DVDs – those are my two current favorites but the yoga isn’t relaxing. It’s a good stretch, but it’s more of a workout then you would think based on normal yoga.

    I had to take two weeks off from running after my half. I was so burnt out and injured at that point. Honestly, I think I really needed to take more time off from longer races because the burn out at anything above 5 miles never faded. Have fun with Jillian, she scares me! I think she might be evil.

  13. Yes! That is a ton of races in March! How long are all the distances? Keep us posted about yoga meltdown, I want to get a yoga DVD so let me know if that should be the one!

      I have 2 halfs, one 10k plus 2, and one 5k. So not too bad, but still a lot of races. I will definitely keep you posted on the yoga meltdown. I’m sure it will kick my butt no matter what since I don’t ever do yoga.

  14. i think it is pretty normal to burn out with exercise. taking a break in april sounds like a good idea after all those races. oh my!! a tower of terror race sounds like so much fun. i love disney. i wish i was there right now!!

    The yoga DVD kicks butt (literally). It is definitely not a laid back chill work out but it is GREAT and Jillian motivates and encourages you through the whole thing.

    I get totally burned out every once in awhile. It usually means I need to switch things up. Switch things up like going back and forth with what type of show I’m watching on my DVR 😉

  17. I used to always get burnt out after a couple months. I am a major creature of habit and always did the same routine (weight for 30 mins and then cardio for 30) everytime i went to the gym, though id switch up what type of cardio and waht i did with the weights day to day it was basically the same and then after about 3 months of that id have an “im bored” pity party and take a few weeks off trying to do other things and end up back there doin the same ol. haha horrible i know.

        Oh my gosh, I have brain problems. Of course they would be the shoes that you have pictured IN YOUR HOUSE! WITH YOUR BUNNY. Oh my goodness.

  19. i definitely get burnt out on working out. especially during the winter time. i just let it slide and then i naturally want to start working out again 🙂

    My sis-in-law does the Wii Fit Jillian workout and says it sucks bc it is too easy & boring FWIW (and my s-i-l isn’t freakishly fit or something either).
    I also get burnt out on exercise occasionally, usually after a big race I take a couple of weeks break.
    Hope your shoes thing has worked itself out. One of my friends had to get HUMUNGOUS mens’ size shoes and that seemed to solve her problem w/ her shoes.

    I hear ya on the burn out. I was scheduled to run 20 miles two weeks ago. I prepared for it but came Saturday morning I could not make myself get up to go. I was tired. I tried again on Sunday morning and still nothing. Oh well. Once the New Orleans Marathon is over I will take a few weeks off and then start again. 🙂

  23. I’m a big ball of lazy, so I regularly take breaks. In fact, I was highly disappointed when I got home from running Austin and realized that I couldn’t be a bum all week. You should take a break; you’ve more than earned one!*

  24. I hope the new shoes work out for you. It must be frustrating having to keep on returning them.

  26. I bought the Yoga Meltdown on iTunes and I do it maybe once a week for a good stretch. Don’t be scared of the meltdown. You basically get into a stretch and “rep it out”. Jillian is a bit ridiculous in the DVD and you can always pause it. She makes fun of yoga a bit…I just got the wave riders 15 too…too scared to wear them on an outdoor run because we are experiencing some mud on my running loop.

      Oh good! I’m looking forward to trying it out even though I suck at yoga. I haven’t tried my wave riders yet but I’m dying to!

    I definitely get burned out from working out sometimes!My body lets me know when I need a break. I like Jillian Michaels. A lot of people say her workouts are too”easy” for someone who’s already fit, but I disagree. They are perfect for those days when you don’t want an all out kill-yourself workout, but still don’t want to skip your workout. Plus, she’s very motivating : )
