Breaking Up is Hard to Do

I work from home two days a week, which is super-crazy-awesome because it allows me to get in a lunchtime workout that I don’t normally get when I work from the office. Sometimes I’ll go to the gym and run four miles, but lately I’ve been loving these little 20 minute HIIT runs I’ve been doing at home (also on the treadmill).

They look like this:

  • 1 mile @ 10:00 (warm up)
  • 1.15 mile alternating every 30 seconds @ 7:30 and 10:00

That second mile is so hard that by the end of it, I can barely breathe, my legs are weak, and I feel like I got in a much longer workout. I’ve done this same run three times now and it’s so challenging, I haven’t had to change it up yet. Once I cool down, I have a crazy burst of energy which I need now that I’ve broken up with my secret lover…Diet Coke.

I think I mentioned awhile ago that I was quitting Diet Coke. Well, that was going fairly well until Texas happened. During my two weeks there, I drank so much Diet Coke that it reached lab rat proportions. Not only was I drinking cans of it all day long but I was getting the fountain drinks at lunch too. Once I got back to Orlando, things didn’t change. I stopped the fountain drinks but could easily drink four cans a day, which I know is not good for me but it’s also not black tar heroine so get off my ass!

Anyway, five days ago I decided that Diet Coke and I needed to go on a break again. I tell myself that I can have one Diet Coke if I really want it, but so far I haven’t. I even brought a Diet Coke to work yesterday just in case I became a raging bitch but I didn’t even feel like I needed it. You know what the Japanese call that?

I’m back to drinking water and sparkling water and I’ve been feeling pretty good so far. I haven’t had headaches from the lack of caffeine like I expected, but holy crap am I tired all.the.time now. I’m pretty sure I have been kept alive and preserved solely by Diet Coke. Without it, I’m relying on those 20 minute lunchtime runs to keep me awake the rest of the work day. I find staying awake really helpful when you want to remain employed and not homeless.

  1. I’ve always been a big water drinker and not soda crazy, but the orange Fanta flows through the street here like a river! It’s everywhere! In top of that, most restaurants serve water here “with gas,” as in carbonated. Blargh! That’s not water, my friends. So yeah, my soda consumption has increased 500%. Bad Amy.*

    • Yes! I love the Seagrams White Peach selzer water. But my Publix stopped carrying that flavor. 🙁 They only have lime (yuck) and the raspberry (which I buy as the lesser evil). I can deal with La Croix Coconut now too. But that’s the only La Croix I like after trying Seagrams. Why must I be so picky?

  4. I had a regular Coke this weekend. OMG it was so good. I can’t even tell you the last time I had soda – but it was calling my name at the football game. I did not regret it. I’m sure this comment is really helping with the break up.

    I could never quit diet soda until I got pregnant and went “off” fake sugar. Even the smell of it turns my stomach. It’s pretty foolproof, I recommend it 🙂

    Do you have Polar Sparkling water where you are? So tasty and it comes in like 46 million favors. I usually by 5 one liter bottles and take one a day to work with me. It’s helped me cut back (but not quit unfortunately!) on the DC. Also, a soda stream is great but I find their water flavorings to be limited.

    I haven’t ever been much of a soda drinker. But I looooooooove coffee. Coffee is my Diet Coke. But, I’ve had to cut it back. So I totally feel you with the caffeine headaches. PAIN AND SUFFERING.

  15. I really want a Diet Coke now. I wasn’t like Kara and craved Diet Coke during pregnancy, but I didn’t drink it because I was worried my baby might end up with a tail or something. My mom had to stop drinking it because it gave her lupus, so maybe I shouldn’t start back up.

  16. I am so very proud of you!!!!!!
    I am a diet coke addict. I swear I am going to break up ASAP, but I don’t know how to begin. I think I am going to do it on vacation, since I probably won’t have it readily available like I do now. I just need to make the decision and stick to it. I can easily drink 3-4 cans a day and justify it because its DIET. zero calories.

    • On vacation is exactly how I stopped the first time! It’s so much easier that way because you’re not bored and thinking about it. So good luck! If you can try to adapt your taste buds to sparkling water, it’s helps when you want carbonation. 🙂

    i read a long time ago that if you leave your soda in the garage, that the heat converts a lot of the nutrasweet to formaldehyde before you even drink it. that. is. gross. so i started mentioning it to people who were like, well i keep it in the house so no big–but what about in transit from the factory to your fridge? who knows how many times pallets are left out and then recooled…i remember hearing too that embalmers are using less formaldehyde these days because people come in PRE-PRESERVED from all the “preservatives” we are eating. FKING GROSS. just say no!

    • That killed my desire for a Diet Coke today, that’s for sure. Except for yesterday (slight step off the wagon), I’ve been doing really good! So hopefully those embalmers will have to use alll the formaldehyde on me. 🙂
