Let Me See That Sushi Roll

Yesterday, hubs and I went to one of our favorite sushi places for lunch – Seito Sushi in Baldwin Park. I’ve barely been exercising and I’ve been eating everything in sight, so I figured I was do for a treat. Winking smile

We decided to try something new, so we started with the Firecracker Shrimp.

The shrimp were amazing, and the sauce is sweet but with a kick. Delicious! But, the dish only comes with three of them. Who does that? Give us two or give us four. Three just causes fist fights at the table.

For my main meal, I ordered a Crab Roll and the Popeye Roll.

Hubs ordered the Crab Roll and the Volcano Roll, and we shared the Gentleman’s Roll.

The Gentleman’s Roll was $22. We almost didn’t order it because it was too expensive but it sounded so good and we don’t get out for sushi too often. Also, the roll had lobster in it, so we figured that was the reason for the price.

Nope. The roll has ten pieces as each piece is half the size of our face.

Everything was delicious and we couldn’t finish it all. We did however, have room for some frozen yogurt from Delish afterwards.

We used our Living Social deal, which doesn’t give cash back for what you don’t use. When the yogurt was weighed at the counter, we were $4 short of taking full advantage of the deal, so we had to load up on more stuff. We got some Cookies n Crème yogurt to go and had to go back and add yogurt and toppings to our cups to get the total to $10.

Poor us having to get MORE yogurt and toppings. Life is cruel sometimes.

I’ve realized I have a problem with make-it-yourself frozen yogurt places. I see everything and want it all without regards to the taste combo.

In the mix:

  • Cake Batter yogurt
  • Butter Beer yogurt (First time I’ve had this. Butter Beer flavor tastes like a Werther’s Original. Yum!)
  • Graham crackers
  • Blue cookies (because they were blue of course)
  • Fruity Pebbles
  • Strawberry Crunchies
  • “Sweet and Melty” morsels that were “hard and minty.”  Blech.
  • Cookie dough

That is about the dumbest combo I’ve ever put together. I mean, it was good and I ate it all but it could have been way better. Hubs decided he’s going to call me “Landfill” because I dump everything I see in the cup.

Guess I’ll have to go back soon and do better. Life can be so hard trying to get your frozen yogurt just right.

What’s your favorite topping combo on ice cream or yogurt? (I think mine is Oreos and brownie bites or Frosted Rice Krispies and pancake syrup. Don’t judge the syrup till you’ve tried it.)

  1. I love Seito!!!

And I pretty much love all toppings…

  2. i’ve only had 1 experience with froyo (i know, i’m lame)…so it doesn’t really qualify for a “fav” topping just yet. BUT i did dump as much as i could on top 🙂

$22 for 1 roll? holy moly. glad you enjoyed it!

  3. I was scanning my google reader in the elevator this morning and read the title of your post and I’ve been singing “let me see that tootsie roll” to myself ever since. So thanks for that.

I completely forgot frosted rice krispies existed! My favorite toppings are cap’n crunch & crushed up waffle cone pieces. I put them in the bottom of the cup first, then the yogurt on top, and other toppings on top of that. Then when you get to the bottom of the cup – surprise, it’s not gone – MORE TOPPINGS!

    • Genius! I’m going to do that next time. Plus, I like when those toppings get a little mushy so they get even yummier while they sit on the bottom. Look at you giving me good ice cream and whipped vodka/diet Sunkist tips. If I ever come to Texas, I’m stealing you away from Carly. Or stealing Carly away from you. I think either of you will do. 🙂

  4. I have the same problem with my fro-yo! I just dump everything in and it is never a proper combination of stuff. I need to learn to stick to either candy or fruit. Not both. Or sweet or tart for the fro-yo, not both. Mine just always ends up kind of weird!

  5. I laughed out loud when I read the title of your post!

Now ready to hear something tragic?
There are NO fro-yo places in the city that I live.
    I know. Unbelievable.

    • We didn’t have any for the longest time. Now it’s like they are on every block. Which I don’t mind, of course. 🙂

My favorite topping is probably going to have to be Oreos and Reeses COMBINED.

    Yeah, I said it.. 😉

  7. Alecia

I thought I would like fresh berries on my fro yo but then the berries just get frozen and hard and I don’t like it. I’ll have to go with the candies next time. That’s what I get for trying to be healthy.

  8. That is a huge sushi roll! Hopefully it was delicious for that price 🙂 We don’t have many frozen yogurt places here…there is one down from my work, I tried it one and it was lame. Nothing like what I see on the blogs 🙂

  9. Heath and hot fudge
Or coconut and pineapple and hot fudge
Or . . . well, anything and hot fudge.

  10. Katie G

The Popeye roll and the Saigon roll are my two favorites there.

  11. Mz. Teri

Landfill… that’s quite creative, and I love it!

You’re right about the frozen yogurt places opening around here. It’s apparently the newest fad… back from the late 80’s/early 90’s. lol

  12. This is like the best meal there is. Sushi + fro yo. I’ve read a couple blog posts on sushi over the last few days…you guys are all tempting me. I think I need to order some for supper tonight!

And I’m a topping maniac (hello, morning oats). I throw everything on my ice cream/fro yo…so delicious.

  13. LoriV.

We have a new froyo place and I love the self serve! My favorite combination is cake batter froyo, coconut, chopped almonds and granola. I’ll also add graham crackers occasionally. I love most of the topping, though, I’m pretty set on Cake Batter froyo!!

    • Me too! I love that stuff! But I think vanilla would have gone better with the amount of toppings I got. It’s just too hard to give up the cake batter. 🙂

  14. The title of this post alone is full of win! Takes me back to 8th grade when my friends and I choreographed a dance to the “Tootsie Roll” song. Gosh, we were such dorks.

And I’m with you on ice cream toppings – I like a lot of them at once. However, I’m strictly against mixing fruity sweet with chocolatey sweet stuff. It’s either all gummy bears and Skittles OR brownies and cookie dough.

  15. I love the chocolate caramel mini cups on ANYTHING. So good!

  16. Oh my goodness that sushi looks GOOD! I also have a hard time controlling myself with the fro yo and all the toppings. Too many choices!

  17. Mmmm sushi! I can’t wait till my husband gets back this weekend because sushi is one of the first places we are going out to eat. He loves it.

I am such an oreo girl when it comes to toppings for ice cream. Oreos all the way.

  18. Fav toppings…Teddy Grahams, Kit Kats, Cookie Dough, Peanut Butter, or Twix…although I could go on forever.

  19. This is basically my dream night. Sushi and froyo = heaven.

  20. Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food

umm yes this post is my FOOD PORN! 🙂 Now I have a craving for both sushi the size of my head and froyo. Can you believe that I have never been to a self serve froyo bar? Can I really be a true food blogger??

I do love ice cream and store bought fro yo however and my favorite way to eat it is topped with homemade granola or an oatmeal raisin cookie. Mmm mmm! 😀

  21. Sushi and frozen yogurt, two of my very favorite things! I could eat sushi every day, but then I’d get mercury poisoning or whatever that is…:)

  22. linzlikewhoa

That sushi looks amazing, I know what I’m having for dinner!

  23. Definitely cookie dough!!!!
The sushi looks super yummy! My pet peeve, though, are sushi pieces which are too big to comfortably fit in your mouth. And my orthodontist used to tell me I had a small mouth. It just isn’t sightly to cram a piece in your mouth and barely be able to chew. I feel my eyes bugging out when I try this.
