Rollin’ with da Foamies

Last night’s workout with the personal trainer (Michael) wasn’t weights at all. He likes to change things up at the last minute and devise workouts that last 10 minutes but make you feel like dying for 3 days. Last night’s workout was done as quickly as possible and looked like this:

  • 21 pull-ups
  • 21 thrusters
  • 15 pull-ups
  • 15 thrusters
  • 9 pull-ups
  • 9 thrusters

Thrusters look like this, except, we used a regular barbell.

The workout took me 8.5 minutes. And hubs said I looked like I was going to DIE during it. Well, I felt like I was going to die. Today, it’s hard to touch my hair.

After the workout, Michael felt bad that the workout was so short, so he asked us if we wanted to do squats and lunges. If you know anything about me, know this – I will not say no and look like a wuss to a personal trainer. So, we stayed.

Hubs and I each did 4 sets of 30 lunges and 30 squats. I did mine first and while hubs was doing his, I used a foam roller for the first time.

Holy crap those hurt! Michael told me I need to stretch in general but that I really need to stretch my calves and foam roll them often because they have a lot of knots. He also said that he noticed my running gait was odd. < —– Does not like hearing this

When I got home, I immediately bought a high-density foam roller online, which was the same one I used at the gym.

Michael was showing me the difference between the one I bought and some other cheaper varities that bow easily or lose their shape, so I’m glad I spent a little extra money to get a really nice one. Well, as nice as a stick of foam can get at least.

The foam roller comes with a free online 80 minute workout video. An 80 minute foam roller video? Is there really that much to do with a piece of cylindrical foam? Aren’t those like pornos anyway? You’re never gonna watch the whole thing because you’re done after 15 minutes.

Not that I would know.

In other news, registration opened for the inaugural St. Pete Rock n Roll Half Marathon on February 12th.

You can bet your sweet cheeks I’ll be running that. It’s 2 weeks before the Gasparilla Half Marathon in Tampa, but I’ll still run them both. I love that Gasparilla race so much and want to make sure the race knows I can run it without pooping during the whole thing. < —- likes to proof herself to races with imaginary personalities

Tonight, I have my Martial Arts Fitness class. Hopefully, I can get a run in too because that -59 Weight Watchers points might be in the -70’s now. Maybe this can be a new challenge for me? To see just how negative I can go. Last time I was on WW, I made it to -105 which I thought was quite the New Year’s Eve accomplishment.

Have you run any Rock n Roll races yet? (I’m running my first two this year: Rock n Roll Savannah (full) in November and Vegas (half) in December. Fun!)

Do you have a foam roller? And if so, would you use it to roll pizza dough if you couldn’t find anything else?

Foam rollers are the spawn of Satan. They help immensely, but holy CRAP do they hurt, especially for your hips/IT band.

    omgsh, foam roll pizza!! brilliant.

Ahhhh I want to run St. Pete!! That’s right after my new set of vacation days kicks in, so mayyybeee, just maybe 🙂

I’ve ran San Antonio (1/2) last year and I’ll be running it again this year … and also just ran Dallas (1/2) in March.

As for foam rolling, I’m pretty sure I got the $25 that will lose it’s shape. But I don’t use it nearly as much as I should so it’s holding up nicely lol

  4. I think my IT band is acting up 🙁 so I was actually going to look into foam rolling. But oh man, it scares me because any time anyone blogs about them they say how much it hurts!!

I’m actually planning on doing the Vegas half, too! It will be my first one. I’m scared to death, but am determined to finish it.

Sounds like you did the FRAN crossfit workout. Gotta love it. And the foam rollers out evil, so are lacross balls. BTW – crossfit workouts have some sort of name associated with them, for some reason they are all female names and are called the “nasty girls” of crossfit. I have incuded a link to sarasota crossfit, crossfit interbay (my ex owns this gym) and to a link that will teach the “Nasty Girls” of crossfit.

  6. Ooh, I would really like to do a Rock n Roll race! There’s one in Virginia Beach in early September, but early September in VA = humidsville, so I have to decide if I can suck it up enough to do it. Also, given the fact that I just spent $30 on an inhaler and already lost it might hinder my ability to run in humidity. Just saying.
I don’t have a foam roller, but I do have a rolling pin. That’ll totally work on my calves, right?

  7. haha, probably not. i don’t think the sweat from my legs would taste very good.

I’ve done the RnR Half in Dallas and San Jose, CA. Which one was hillier? DALLAS. I had no idea there were rolling hills in Dallas. I’m not used to hills being from south flatsville texas.
I’ve never used a foam roller. I heard it hurts in a good way.
Good luck on your class tonite!

80 minute foam rolling video?! uhhhh

I ran RnR Dallas this year and am debating treking up for the Vegas half… decisions, decisions.

  10. Thanks for visiting my blog! I give excellent nutrition advice, like that leftover chocolate bunny I just finished totally counts towards my protein for the day. Because if I’ve learned anything, bunnies are animals, and animals are protein.

I’m running my first RnR event this year. The Chicago 1/2. It’s also my first half marathon! I can’t wait to do a few of them and get the awesome medals!

  11. dude you can do that many pull ups?! I love it, I am working to be able to do 1 right now.

I love RNR races. Vegas is a total blast on the strip. I am doing the inagural Miami Beach and was thinking about St. Pete since a flight from miami is super cheap!

    • I saw there was a Miami Beach one! Latin music, ooh la la. *sways hips*

Oh, and that workout – those were assisted pull-ups for me. Still HARD, but I can’t even do 1 either.

Ugh…I hate the foam roller! And for the record I kind of hate thrusters too 🙂 I did the 21/15/9 workout Saturday, but mine was slam balls, sumo deadlift high-pulls, kettlebell swings, reverse lungs, and push-ups…fun, fun, fun.

I love the title of this post. Seriously love. And aw that looks fun! There’s a Rock N Roll Half in San Antonio but… yeah I’m never gonna be able to do that.

    • Never say never girl! Oh, and thanks for the blog title love. I was seriously happy with myself when I came up with that. I even emailed my best friend to make sure she appreciated it. LOL

  14. I have a foam roller and I love it! My MIL bought it for me for Christmas before I started my half marathon training and so glad I asked for it. It hurts so bad at first, but feels so good.

  15. 80 minutes. Are you kidding me? Who even wants to workout with their foam roller for 80 minutes. I could think of about a billion things that would be better than an 80 minute date with your foam roller. LOL.

I do not have one…yet. I should probably jump on that train.

  16. Tiff

I looooove my foam roller! It hurts soooo good!!

  17. Rock and Roll races are great! I’ve done Vegas (x2), Nashville, and San Diego. They’re really well organized, but CRAZY packed! You’ll love Vegas especially, the course is downright rad. I’m not planning on being sober for it though, are you?

  18. What do you do with the foam roller? I was going to Google it, but I wasn’t sure what Google would throw back and I’m at work. 🙂

    Awesome Post title!!

    • LOL. You “sit” on it in different ways and roll back and forth from your hips to your calves (probably could work on your back too). It really “massages” your muscles and it hurts at first but after you muscle loosen up, it feels SO good. It just helps you get a really good deep stretch without someone else helping you out.

      • Ooooooh, ok. I will have to look into it when I get home and modify the description you gave a little more because I have feeling Google will link me to some site in Tijuana. 🙂

Love foam rolling! Yeah, it hurts, but it’s a gooooood kind of hurt. How do you roll your calves? I can’t get to them.
